There was nothing kingly about Akshay Kumar as he visited the Gurudwara Rakab Ganj Sahib in the city on Thursday.
Just a day before the release of Singh Is Kinng, he and producer Vipul Shah hot-footed it to the gurudwara to pacify the members of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC). Just a few days before the films release, the DSGMC had said that it had asked for a ban on the film in Delhi, and appointed a three-member panel to watch the film and determine if it was offensive to Sikhs.
The actor had to go and pay obeisance at the gurudwara to ensure that the movie, already cleared by the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), would not run into hot water with the body in Delhi.

Approval from the SGPC also came only after Shah made a dozen changes in the movie based on its recommendations.
Amid heavy security, Akki walked in to the office of the DSGMC in the gurudwara, and they had a long chat. Finally, it was announced that the issue had been resolved amicably. Paramjit Singh Sarna, president of the DSGMC, said, Although we are not happy, we have been assured by the producer and Akshay that if there is anything objectionable in the film that could hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community, they will change it. Theyve promised that theyll write to the I&B ministry and the Indian Motion Picture Association to ensure that Sikhs are not portrayed in an objectionable manner in films.
However, the large crowd present didnt look very amicable. In the press conference, Akki couldnt get a word in edgeways as he would be shouted out by the angry crowd the moment he started to speak. Finally, he had to be escorted to a separate room to answer questions. Reportedly, Akki told the members of the community that he was like their child, and like an erring child in a family, they should forgive him.

Later, Akki told DT, This is not a controversy. What we had today was more of a discussion. And a discussion is very different from a controversy. The gurudwara committee wanted some answers from Vipul and me, and we spoke to them. They understood what we said and liked what we had put in the film the strength of the Sikh community.
They gave us the green signal to release the film. But there were some answers that they wanted just from me. Plus, it was very important for me to go and clarify what Im standing for. Im from Amritsar, Im a Punjabi too and I dont want to hurt anybody knowingly or unknowingly. There were 12 changes suggested in the film and weve made them. Amongst other changes, there was a mispronunciation in a gurbani. We changed that as per the suggestions made to us by the body.
